August 9, 2026. August usually brings relatively affordable prices for Maui car rental, and this year August does not disappoint travelers looking for deals. Prices seem to have settled into their low shoulder season range that they will hold until mid-September when they begin to rise again. This week's most affordable rates are $262/week with Sixt at the airport, and an even lower $218/week off-airport with free shuttle service from Nu Rentacar. Minivans, while still over $100/day at the airport, have dropped nearly $100/week from last week. In this low-season period, last minute deals are often possible - but how long will this last? Keep reading for all the details.

HOW MUCH IS THE CHEAPEST MAUI RENTAL CAR ON AUGUST 10, 2026?

Every week, we list the lowest available prices for a one-week car rental from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG), for a range of different vehicle categories, with the company offering the best price. This is our overview of Maui car rental prices for the week beginning Monday, August 10, 2026.

Category Price Company

Economy $262 SiXT

Midsize $302 Dollar

Jeep $533 Alamo

Convertbl $735 Thrifty

SUV $507 SiXT

7 St SUV $603 Dollar

Minivan $803 Dollar

The prices quoted here include all applicable taxes and fees. Prices for these vehicle types charted week-to-week for the last 14 months are illustrated in Figure 1.

These are the lowest prices in every car category: The lowest price for a compact car from Kahului Airport (OGG) this week is with SiXT, at $262/week. Mid-size cars are starting at $302/week, at Dollar. Jeeps are starting at $533/week, from Alamo. Convertibles start at $735/week, from Thrifty. The cheapest standard SUV's are $507/week, at SiXT. HOW MUCH DID MAUI RENTAL CAR PRICES CHANGE FROM LAST WEEK?

This is how the lowest price for a one week rental from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) starting on August 3, 2026 has changed from the week before, for every vehicle category:

Category This week Last Change Economy $262 $287 -9%

Midsize $302 $302 0%

Jeep $533 $415 +28%

Convertbl $735 $625 +18%

SUV $507 $553 -8%

7 st SUV $603 $601 0%

Minivan $803 $892 -10%

This week's prices show relatively little change compared to last week. This is an indication that they are settling into a range for low season.

The lowest price for a one-week rental on an economy car was down 9% from the week before. The price for a mid-size car was unchanged, For a standard SUV, the change was down 8%, large 7-seat SUV's were unchanged, and minivans were down 10%. The biggest movers were Jeeps, up 28%, and convertibles, up 18%. While significant in terms of dollars spent, these are relatively small moves by Maui standards, where high volatility is the rule.

Prices for this week and last week, with the percentage change week-to-week, are illustrated in Figure 2.

We expect that prices will hold more or less steady, with relatively small moves in either direction. from here until mid-September, when they begin to rise again as the return of cold weather in continental US and Canada kicks off the fall travel season. The next few weeks are the best time to rent a car in Mauj with prices at their most affordable level for the year.

IS IT CHEAPER TO BOOK IN ADVANCE, OR AT THE LAST MINUTE?

This week we perform a quick data-based analysis of whether and/or when it makes sense to book a Maui rental car in advance versus waiting until the last-minute (or in this case, the last day) to make the reservation.

There are many different opinions with regard to this questions, but we have never seen any answer that is not shrouded in any number of perceptual biases - this is because nobody bothers to collect or publish hard data on the time-variation of prices for Maui car rentals. And there could be very understandable reasons why this information is deliberately kept opaque by the holders of the data, who are the car rental companies.

In contrast to rental car pricing, the study of price volatility is a very deeply explored subject for commodities and equities, having earned some notable economists a Nobel prize for the famous Black-Scholes option pricing formula.

It is rare for anyone making an advance reservation on a rental car to think of it as a futures contract for which some very advanced math applies to analyzing the fairness or correctness of the price, and while this is possible to do, this is neither the time nor the place (nor the audience) for this analysis.

We will limit ourselves to trying to elucidate on a very simplified level whether there is any predictable seasonal variation in the difference between a price booked a month in advance versus a price booked on the day before that start of a rental. This applies to the price of the most affordable (i.e. cheapest) car available for that date, which may be any car from any company - as long as it is the car with the lowest available price.

To this end, in mid-December of 2024, we began to track the movement of advance booking prices as the reservation date approaches. Every week, we checked the price of the most affordable car one week out, two weeks out, three weeks out, up to five weeks out, and saved the numbers for comparison. The accompanying chart in Figure 3 shows the variation of the prices taken five weeks (or about one month) in advance, and one day in advance, from January of 2024 until now.

It may come as a surprise that these lines cross each other at multiple points during the year, meaning, sometimes, the price a month in advance is lower, and at other times, it is the price one day in advance which is the lower of the two.

This really flies in the face of the old saw that rental car prices in Maui always rise as the travel date approaches and that the best price is the one secured as far as possible in advance.

Figure 4. Fluctuating savings percentages for Maui car rentals when booked one month in advance versus one day before,
Figure 4. Fluctuating savings percentages for Maui car rentals when booked one month in advance versus one day before,

It may come as even more of a surprise that these variations between advance booking savings and last-minute booking savings are time-correlated meaning that they follow transitions between persistent regimes. This is illustrated in Figure 4. The line in this chart is a composite curve of the percentage saved from booking in advance when advance prices are lower, composited with the percentage saved from booking at the last minute when this is the lower price.

From mid-February of 2025 until early October, the prices available one day in advance and one week in advance were consistently lower than the price a month in advance, with savings of 25% or more frequently possible.

In October this pattern reversed, and prices for last minute bookings were consistently higher than prices booked in advance, with late booking often punished with extreme last minute increases, and savings of 50% or more often possible from booking in advance,

The pattern reversed again a few months later in March of 2026, with savings approaching 50% sometimes possible from booking at the last minute.

Then in June through most of July the advantage was for booking a month in advance, with savings often between 25% and 50% versus booking late.

Now we are back into a regime of savings for booking late, with the last minute price consistently 25% or more lower than the price in advance.

For the entire period that we have collected the data, from Jan. 12 2025 to Aug. 9 2026 today, a total of 83 weeks, the price one day in advance was lower than the price one month in advance in 50 of the 83 weeks, or exactly 60% of the time.

Let's segment the data set into two one-year periods. The first one-year beginning with the data, in January 2025, and the second one-year period ending with the data, this August. If price variation follows a seasonal pattern, then one year periods should show a consistent pattern of advance savings versus last-minute savings.

For the one-year period from Jan 12 to Jan 12, the price one day in advance was lower for 34 out of the 52 weeks, or 65% of the time.

But for the 52-week period ending this week, the last minute price was lower in only 24 weeks - or only 46% of the time.

The size of this difference suggests a significant shift in the time variation of advance prices, with last minute savings becoming less likely in the more recent one-period than they were in the earlier one-year period.

This could be due to any number of factors - one of which we've commented on previously, the advent of AI machine-learning based pricing strategies that optimize for profit margin versus units rented.

The data we've reviewed here seems to give quantitative support to this notion. If the trend continues, it may become harder and harder for bargain-hunters to find last minute deals. In fact, comparing this summer to the one before, last year, advantage to last-minute booking held through the entire busy summer travel season, aside from a brief blip caused by substitution pressure right when the minivan safety recall was announced in early July. But this summer, advantage shifted to advance booking for several weeks from late May to late July.

William Shatner aka Captain Kirk popularized Priceline as the go-to for smart travelers looking for last-minute deals. But if we're actually seeing a transition into a new regime of pricing driven by AI, then services like Priceline may have to find new ways to generate revenue - or go the way of the do-do.

HOW DO WE GET OUR MAUI CAR RENTAL PRICE DATA?

Prices for Maui car rentals vary from week to week, and the company offering the lowest price also changes from week to week. Furthermore, one company may be offering the lowest price in one vehicle category, for example mid-size cars, while a different company has a better price on another category, for example mini-vans.

We have recently completed three full years of weekly monitoring of the lowest available price for a one-week rental at Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG), compiling prices for vehicles available at the Consolidated Rent A Car facility (ConRAC) as well as rentals from off-airport locations served by free shuttle. This survey covers 10 different companies, Ace (closed as of March 2026), Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Fox, Hertz, National, Nu, Payless, Sixt, and Thrifty.

This price survey covering three years from July 2023 to this July is illustrated in Figure 3. This chart marks an important milestone in our multi-year price-tracking effort. We will return to it in future editions of this blog to discuss salient features like the significant rise in the price floor in 2026 compared to 2025 (clearly visible on the chart), and the repeating seasonal variation of prices (also clearly visible).

Beginning in July 2024, we expanded our data collection from just the lowest price available to the lowest prices in seven vehicle categories - compact, mid-size, Jeep, convertible, SUV, 7-seat SUV, and minivan - from 10 different companies at Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG): Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, SiXT, and Thrifty. Each week, for every vehicle type, we noted which company offered the lowest price. Later this month we will have completed two full years of this data set - which will again give us plenty of salient findings to dive into, deeply.

Previously we conducted a five-year price-tracking study for the lowest price economy car category beginning in February 2013 and continuing to February 2018. A sample of these results is in Figure 4, that shows the five-year average of the price over a one-year duration.
