Jan. 30, 2026. A proposal to impose an additional $3/day tax on Maui Car rentals has returned to the Hawaii State Legislature. If passed, the new tax would be added to the existing daily Rental Motor Vehicle Surcharge Tax, and would bring the daily flat tax on Maui's car rentals to a total of $11/day beginning in January 2027. January 25, 2026 - Prices for Maui rental cars from Kahului Airport (OGG), averaged over the entire month of January, were much higher in 2026 than 2025 . The increase varied by vehicle type, with most categories rising in the range of 30% to 45% higher than they were one year ago.
