Huge Rate Hike for Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) Public Parking

December 31, 2023 - Happy New Year! ABM, the company that operates public parking for Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG), is ringing in 2024 with a huge rate increase! Parking fees have held steady for several years, but beginning February 1, the daily parking rate is going up a full 60%, from $15/day to $24/day. Rates for short duration parking - 15 minutes to five hours - are doubling in some cases.

WHAT DO AIRPORT PARKING FEES HAVE TO DO WITH MAUI CAR RENTAL

When you rent a car from a one of Maui's local car rental companies, or through a car-sharing service like Turo, you may be given the option to pick up your rental car from the airport parking lot. Usually, you are the one responsible for paying the parking fees on the way out. The parking fees are an added cost on top of your actual rental cost. Depending on how long the car sits awaiting your arrival, the parking fees can add up. With the rate increase, the added cost is even more.

For returning the car, if you have made arrangements for an airport return, then the rental operator will be the one responsible for paying the parking fees. If you select the airport return option, many operators now tack on an additional fee to cover the parking fees. These fees can be in the range of $25-$30 with some of Maui's local car rental companies.

And, to crack down on supposed parking fee fraud - according to ABM, a huge problem - brand new parking machines have been deployed, with OCR cameras that stamp the car's license plate number on the parking ticket on entry, and verify it automatically on exit.

This is a great technology advancement, but it does not really help with the only form of parking fee fraud we're aware of, which is ABM actually double charging - and in some cases, triple charging - for parking, both with the new system, and the old system. And we have documented instances of both! Is it incredible that the new system was malfunctioning right from the get-go? No, absolutely not. This is typical of what we've come to expect of ABM.
