October 1, 2023 - How badly has Maui's tourism economy been affected by the wildfire? On September 28, Hawaii's Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism released its statistics for the month of August 2023. According to the report, for the entire month, visitor arrivals to Maui were down nearly 59% from August 2022. Before the wildfire, visitor traffic for August 2023 was on track to equal the year before.
This means that in the weeks after the wildfire, visitor traffic was down 79%., to just one fifth of same period of the year before. The numbers for September are not expected until the end of this month.
