June 16, 2024 - Maui car rental cost can be as little as $181/week for an economy car rented off-airport, or as much as $1,090/week for a minivan rented from the airport. Other vehicle types - mid-size, convertible, Jeep, SUV - fall in between.

WHAT'S INCLUDED IN THE COST?

These rates are for a one-week rental beginning on Monday June 17. The rates include all mandatory taxes and fees, i.e. they are all-in or out-the-door, but they do not include optional items like collision and comprehensive coverage, supplemental liability insurance (SLI), road-side assistance, or pre-paid re-fueling.

WHICH MAUI CAR RENTAL COMPANIES ARE COVERED In THIS SURVEY?

This rate survey included all top-tier brands with locations in Maui, either at the Kahului Airport (OGG), or off-airport locations nearby the airport or at resort locations. These companies' rates are listed in the Online Travel Agents (OTA) systems. The list includes ACE, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, National, Payless, SixT, Thrifty, and a few others. DOES IT COST MORE TO RENT FROM MAUI'S KAHULUI AIRPORT (OGG)?

The cost of picking up a Maui rental car from the airport can be substantially higher than nearby off-airport options. This is confirmed across all vehicle types covered in this week's price survey. The difference in cost is due only in part to additional mandatory taxes and fees levied on airport rentals, Our research shows that rental companies also tack on an added "convenience premium" for airport rentals, that can add substantially to the cost. In this week's survey, the 7-passenger SUV vehicles were available for airport rental only, with no off-airport options available.

WHY DOES IT COST SO MUCH MORE TO RENT A JEEP OR MINIVAN?

The cost of renting a Jeep or minivan is substantially more than other vehicle types. There is absolutely no reason for the high prices that rental companies charge for Jeeps or minivans compared to other vehicles, except that there is higher demand for these vehicles so the rental companies can get away with charging more. If you are looking for a vehicle that can carry seven passengers, you can save a substantial amount of money - nearly $100/day - by renting a 7-passenger SUV instead of a minivan. For an open-top vehicle, choosing a convertible over a Jeep saves you between $20 and $30 per day.

HOW MUCH DO MAUI CAR RENTAL RATES CHANGE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR?

Maui car rental rates are seasonal and vary significantly over the course of the year. Rates are highest during holidays and Christmas. They are lowest during the shoulder seasons of late spring and early fall. During the last year, the rate for an economy car - the cheapest car available to rent - has been as low as $150/week, and as high as $600/week.
